Sharing My Heart

As you start reading, I beg you to get through the whole thing.  Today’s blog is a passionate plea from my heart!

Today I had every intention to continue my current blog series, “The Purpose of Sex”.  It would have been part 5 in the series.

However, something happened today, and I was just impressed by the Lord to blog about another topic.  It is in the same general area because I am going to be blogging about sex, but it will not be about God’s purpose for it.  The blog will be about how perverse our world has made sex.

I am sure you are sitting there thinking “Doesn’t Josh talk about the perversion of sex a great deal?”.  If you are thinking this, then you would be correct.  My fear is that this blog will just be white noise.  My hope is that God will use it to wake us up.

I know I have asked this before, but I am going to ask again.  Will you post the link to this blog post on your Facebook page?  Will you tweet about it?  I don’t have social media because of my past issues with sexual sin.  There are just too many things on there that have the potential to trip me up.  Why do I want you to post it?  Read this blog post, and I will answer that question for you.

Before I get started with this post I did want to mention briefly about my current blog series so you can look forward to my next post on “The Purpose of Sex”.

Why do I write about this so much? –

  1. Many of the men and students I have helped were not taught the true purpose of sex growing up, either in their homes or in church.
  2. Culture is teaching many false things about sex and its purpose.
  3. If I understand the purpose for sex, then I have a much better shot of understanding God’s boundaries.

7 Purposes of Sex (not saying this is all there is, but these 7 are outlined in Scripture for sure) –

  1. Sex is worship.
  2. Sex is about intimacy.
  3. Sex demonstrates faithfulness.
  4. Sex is intended to be a selfless act.
  5. Sex is for pleasure.
  6. Sex produces a Godly heritage.
  7. God honoring sex can only be heterosexual.

Okay, now what is on my heart today?  I meet with many men and male students one on one each week.  I do this across the Dallas/Ft Worth metroplex.  This means that I drive a great deal.  Today I drove down a road in the Dallas/Ft Worth metroplex that I don’t normally drive down.  There was construction going, and I was trying to go around it.

As I drove down this road, I literally almost threw up in my mouth.  The whole time I was driving my heart was just grieving. There was this ache in the pit of my stomach.

Why was this the case?  For about a stretch of one mile, I saw strip clubs, an adult video book store, and billboards advertising all things sexual.  It was blatant and in your face.  It was immoral and provocative.  As I drove I found myself crying out to God.  How long Lord will followers of Jesus be okay with this? How long Lord will followers of Jesus bow down to this?

In no way am I shaming those who are in the adult industry.  I don’t know why they are involved in it.  All I know is they need Jesus just like I need Jesus.  We all need Jesus!

It got me to thinking though.  There are so many things that are immoral and displease God the way we do sex in America. Homosexuality is not only deemed okay, homosexual marriage is the law of the land.  Being transgender is not only something we see as acceptable, we now have special rights and privileges for those people.  Strips clubs and adult book stores/novelty shops are big business.  Is seems porn makes up 1/2 the internet.  Because of texting, one of the top google searches on the internet is, “Should I send nudes?”.  We have web sites devoted to cheating on their spouses.  We have young adults posting sex acts on social media through twitter or snapchat.  When does it stop?

Again, hear me.  I am not condemning people who choose a lifestyle of sin.  I am not condemning people who make their living off the sex industry.  I am not condemning people who struggle with sexual sin.  Several years of my life were spent bowing down to sexual sin.  God has set me free, and I am so thankful.  The only one who can condemn is Jesus.  He will condemn those who don’t bow down to Him to hell, but He wants them to be free from condemnation and experience forgiveness.  This only comes when one receives the gift of Jesus and surrenders their life to Christ.

Later today, I got in front of my computer, and I thought I was going to blog part 5 of my series.  I just couldn’t.

In the Old Testament, God’s chosen nation was Israel.  God wanted them to bow down to only Him.  They were surrounded by other nations who were bowing down to false gods.  Too often, the people of Israel would bow down to these false gods as well.  Two of those gods were Asherah and Baal.  It is my understanding that the worship of the false gods, Baal and Asherah, involved sexual practices.  I would even go so far as to say grotesque sexual practices.

As I reflect on driving by those billboards today, etc. I am struck with the face that these are our false gods we bow down to. These strip clubs and adult novelty shops are our altars to Baal.  These porn sites are our Asherah poles.

There are just too many men and students that I know who keep bowing down to them.  It must stop!!!!!!

Let me pause and make an analogy.  I used to live in a city who tested their tornado sirens once a month.  I got so used to it that when an actual alarm was sounded I wasn’t even paying attention.  In fact, my wife had to come to the garage and tell me to get inside in the closet because there was a tornado.  I had become numb to the siren because I had heard it so much. That tornado literally struck down the street behind our house.  I am glad my wife was more aware than I was that day.

What’s my point?  You hear me talk about this all the time, and you might be tired of it.  If that is the case, then I understand why you feel that way.  I really do.

But I am begging you.  I am pleading with you.  Post this link on your Facebook page.  Post it on your twitter account.  Why?  I want those in your sphere of influence to possibly read it.  I want those who do not know God to pause and consider that maybe the path they are on is wrong.  I want them to know that God loves them enough to save them from themselves.  I want those who do know God to do the same thing I am asking of you, the same thing I am asking of myself.

Pray!  Fast!  Ask God to break our hearts over this!  This has happened right under our noses.  It has happened on our watch. We must repent!  I don’t know what that looks like for you, but God does.  My repentance and my brokenness has led me to write blogs like this, have a web site, speak on the dangers of sexual sin, and help guys one on one.  I am not saying God will say all of this to you, but I am saying this.

Our hearts must break over what breaks the heart of God!  Brokenness typically leads to some form of action.

Will you pray and fast with me?  Will you post the link to this blog?  Will we say enough is enough?  Will we beg our pastors to speak on this.  Will we repent of the sexual sin we bow down to?  Will we repent of our indifference to this idolatry?  May we tear down altars to Baal, and may we tear down our Asherah poles.  May we do this for God Almighty and for our children’s children’s children!

Jesus alone is worthy of our worship, and living life the way Jesus wants is the only way to live!  When we live like this, it is worship!
