Sexual Sin Recovery, Sex is Sacred (Part 9)

I know I have been blogging about this for quite some time.  My children are making fun of me.  They are asking me if I will make it to Part 47.  I just tell them that I write about what the Lord lays on my heart.  With that said, how about we continue looking at the Sexual Sin Recovery and Sex is Sacred pages from my site.  All of life is sacred and is all about worshiping and glorifying Jesus!  The gospel sets us free!  We are free to worship Christ alone and not bow down to false idols, like sexual sin.

Today we will look at the issue of Generational Sin:

Let me start off by saying this is a controversial topic theologically.  There are those who believe generational sin does not exist.  There are some who believe it exists, but they believe the moment you trust Christ that the curse of that sin is broken.

Let me humbly tell you what I believe.  I believe that generational sin is real and can wreck havoc on the life of a believer if gone unchecked.  Let me be clear though.  I believe the cross of Jesus and His blood sets us free from sin and from sin’s curse, but I also believe that we must walk in that.

Let me illustrate:

The moment I trust Christ I am completely forgiven.  To experience this forgiveness I must regularly confess my sin.  The moment I trust Christ I am free from the power of sin.  To experience this freedom I must walk in the power of the Holy Spirit.

I believe the same to be true of generational sin.  The moment I trust Christ I am free from the curse of sin, including generational sin, but I believe that I must walk through some things to experience being free from that generational sin curse.

Exodus 20 tells us that God punishes the sins of the Father to the 3rd and 4th generation.  It also says he blesses 1,000 generations of those who love and obey Him.  I want the latter, not the former.  How do I experience that specifically when it comes to sexual sin.

If you have a history where your parents or grandparents participated in sexual immorality, then I believe you are battling generational sin.  According to Nehemiah 1, the first thing to do is confess your own sexual sin, but then you must confess the sexual sin of your family.  Nehemiah confesses his own idolatry, his father’s idolatry, and the idolatry of the nation of Israel.

I am sure you are thinking, “There is no way I am confessing my family’s sexual sin to the Lord.  That is their stuff, not mine.”  Read Nehemiah 1 and then tell me why we don’t need to do this.  This is hard and painful, but I have seen God move powerfully and bring freedom in people’s lives when they do this.

You cannot just stop with the confession.  I believe you then need to move to Matthew 16 as well.  It is there that Peter confesses that Jesus is the Christ.  In the passage you see Jesus explain that He indeed is the Christ, and He is the rock, the cornerstone if you will, that the church is built on.  Christ says the gates of hell cannot prevail against Him or His church.

He then gives Peter the keys to the kingdom and with it the power to bind and loose.  For the longest time I did not understand this.  I have since come to understand that this is talking about the realm of the forces of darkness.  When we sin sexually over and over again, God literally gives us over to that sin.  When this happens, I believe the forces of darkness try to oppress our hearts.  They cannot possess a believer, but they can oppress them.  It is almost like they take residence in rooms of our house.  It is not our house though.  It is our heart.

Jesus gives every believer the authority to bind the demonic in His Name.  We can declare, “In Jesus’ Name I bind you, you spirit of lust!”

We don’t stop there.  We then proclaim, “Holy Spirit, loose within me holiness and purity that only comes from your Spirit.”

This does not just have to be sexual sin.  It can be any sin.

To recap:

  1. Generational Sin is Real!
  2. We can be living under a curse from it even though the cross has set us free.
  3. To experience freedom from generational sin we must confess the sin of our family members, as well as our own.
  4. We must bind the demonic, and ask the Holy Spirit to loose in us His power that leads to freedom.
