God’s Creation, My Value

I had the opportunity to sit down with a college student the other day.  He had grown up in church and even prayed the “prayer of salvation”.  This of course was followed up by him being baptized to publicly proclaim His faith in Christ.

I looked at him, and he told me that he had not walked with the Lord for many years, probably even since Jr. High, he surmised.  I asked him if his heart was devoted to the Lord, and he told me “no”.  I then read him Deuteronomy 6:4-9 and explained that God wanted him to love Him (God) with His whole heart.  He explained to me he did love God, but he was just not devoted to Him.

We then proceeded to have a conversation about whether he knew the Lord or not, since it would seem love and devotion go together.  However, that subject is for another blog.  I so have much to say on that issue, but I will save it for another time.

As the conversation continued, I asked him why God was worthy of our devotion.  He said, “I would say because he created me, and he died on the cross.”

I could not agree more, and I think the apostle Paul would say the same thing.  In Colossians 1 it talks about how Christ is the Creator, but it also talks about how He is the Redeemer.

He created me so right off the bat I am of value.  Praise God!!!  Colossians 1 says I was created by Him and for Him.  My value and worth is in the fact that I am His creation!  However, it does not stop there.  Because of sin, we had to be redeemed.  Colossians 1 speaks of God valuing me so much that through Christ I can be transferred from darkness to light and have complete forgiveness of my sin.  Wow!!!!

The next time we look up at the sky we will probably see an amazing blue color, some uniquely shaped clouds, and an incredible sun.  Let us take time to acknowledge the incredible creation of God, but let’s not stop there.  Let’s also look within ourselves and say, “The same God who made that beautiful sky made me, and He valued me enough to redeem me through Jesus.”

When we experience this, our response is similar to Deuteronomy 6.  We are devoted to Him and love Him with our whole heart because He is worthy of nothing less.

Sexual Sin Resources

I would like to share some resources with you that are very helpful in the area of pornography recovery and prevention.  If you find yourself in a battle with porn, I would encourage you to look at these resources and contact me.  In addition to this, if you are a parent, I would strongly urge you to look at these resources regarding sexual sin prevention.

The first one is a book called Surfing for God.  This is a great book on sexual sin recovery, but I especially like what it teaches regarding internet pornography and the brain in chapter 10.  I think reading this chapter can help parents understand just how dangerous internet porn can be.

The other resource is a woman by the name of Anne Marie Miller.  She is a speaker and author and recently blogged about her experience at multiple youth camps this summer.  A friend of mine emailed me this blog post today.  It is a must read for parents!

As parents we cannot keep our children from sinning, but we can be vigilant in educating ourselves about what is going on in the online world.  And we must be vigilant about connecting with our kids so we know what is going on in their world, and more importantly, their heart!

Media Fast Update and Other Stuff

Kelly and I ended our media fast this past weekend.  It lasted about 6 weeks.  We are strongly considering starting another one.  We just really loved the deeper connection we had with the Lord, and we really enjoyed the even stronger, relational connection we had with each other, as well as our children.  We learned that we can be easily distracted by media, and we also learned that there is a huge temptation out there to compromise our integrity and God’s holiness through the media we allow ourselves to engage with.  We will let you know if the Lord leads us to start another one.

On another note, I wanted to share some parent tidbits regarding internet filters and family friendly entertainment.  I believe every family needs an internet filter/blocker.  Below are some that I find to be the best.  Just click on the link, and it will take you to the site.

If you have others that you like, feel free to comment on this post.  I will happily publish your post.  We all want to protect our children from the evil of internet pornography, as well as other evils on the internet.

Regarding family friendly entertainment, this is just one of those really cool God stories.  As you know I preached at Grace Covenant Church in Arlington 3 weeks in July.  The last Sunday I preached there, it just so happened that a student was at the church visiting with his Grandparents.  The student’s grandparents are members there, and he was staying with them while his parents were on vacation.  It turns out that he and I knew each other from my connection with Grace Prep.  That Sunday’s message we were talking about doing practical things to protect our children.  He emailed me that week and told me about this family friendly site he has put together.  It is fun for kids, and it protects them from all inappropriate advertisements and pop ups they would get from other sites.  Check it out by clicking on the link below:

If you like his site, or like any of these internet filters, I would encourage you to use them for your family, and I would encourage you to pass this info along to other parents and grandparents you know.
